Warm South

Issued: 0530hrs Friday 16th March 2018
Duty forecaster: Matthew Hugo

Very cold across northern Europe as winter weather returns, much milder, if not warmer but unsettled across more central and southern areas

Friday
Into Friday and another Scandinavian high pressure will bringing some very cold weather to much of central and northern areas of Europe. All of Scandinavia will be bitterly cold with some snow flurries and these very cold conditions will be filtering westwards into Poland, Germany, Denmark and, later in the day into parts of France, Benelux and the British Isles. In contrast will be across more central and southern areas of Europe where it will be unsettled, but much milder, if not warmer. A south-westerly wind will likely bringing a plume of warm, or very warm conditions into more central and eastern areas of the Med through the day and feeling quite humid here too with perhaps some local downpours and thunderstorms developing across Italy and perhaps Greece too.

Saturday
During Saturday and very cold weather will continue to move westwards across much of northern areas of Europe. As a result all of Scandinavia, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, France and the British Isles will be dominated by very cold, late winter weather with some snow possible in places too. Very unsettled conditions are forecast to continue through some central and eastern areas of Europe, with some particularly heavy rain and downpours possible across Romania, Hungary and Slovakia with perhaps some snow possible too. Warm and humid conditions will continue, however, across more eastern areas of the Med with some very warm weather possible across Cyprus, Greece and surrounding countries but with some downpours possible. Spain and Portugal will have some showery and cool conditions in association with north or north-westerly winds, but perhaps with longer spells of rain across Portugal later.
