Week ahead - December 16, 2017
Much milder
Rain mostly west

Issued: 1000hrs Saturday 16th December 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Westerly winds dominate

A marked change to recent conditions, as mild southwesterly winds sweep across the country in the run up to Christmas. Very mild conditions are expected in the middle of the new week. Things may drop cooler from the north-west later in the week, but it does not look as cold as recent times. Occasional rain, most persistent in the west & north-west of the British Isles. Some fog and murk.

Tuesday 19/12/17
High pressure lies toward the south of Britain. Mild southwesterly winds influence the country. A lot of cloud, especially in the west. Patchy drizzly rain for western coasts and hills, but amounts mostly small. Some more persistent rain will move into western Scotland & Ireland. Brightest skies toward the east of Britain, with some sunshine breaking through. Breezy in the north. Highs 10 to 13C, perhaps a degree or so higher to the lee of high ground.

Wednesday 20/12/17
Fronts trailing in from the Atlantic will run across northern Britain, bringing outbreaks of rain or drizzle. Over hills in the north-west, it may turn into a very wet day, but some uncertainty on where the heaviest falls will occur - possibly the Lake District and Wales, perhaps western Scotland. Cloudy for most places. Some brightness in eastern Scotland. Mild in the south, a little cooler north, highs 8 to 12C.

Thursday 21/12/17
A weakening front sinks southwards, bringing cloudy and damp conditions to central-southern England, but it should stay mild here. Murkiest in the south-west. Brighter toward the north, but slightly cooler. A few showers will affect western Scotland, wintry over the mountains. Winds fairly light. Breezy in the far north. Highs 6 to 11C.

Friday 22/12/17
Staying fairly mild, although temperatures lower than midweek, especially in the north. A general weaterly flow, with high pressure centred south of Britain. Patchy rain or drizzle, mostly in the west. Highs 5 to 10C.

Saturday 23/12/17
Fronts moving in from the Atlantic bring a threat of rain to north-western Britain & Ireland, whilst the south & east should stay largely dry. Breezy in the north, perhaps windy. Highs 6 to 11C.

Sunday 24/12/17
A cold front is expected to pass south-eastwards. A weakening zone of rain moves across central-southern areas. Showery in the north & north-west. Slightly cooler, 5 to 10C.
