Quiet up to Christmas
Generally mild, some fog

Issued: 1000hrs Monday 18th December 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

A green Christmas most likely

The run up to Christmas will see fairly quiet weather, with high pressure close to the British Isles. Some lingering fog, and a little drizzle. More unsettled toward Christmas and beyond, as frontal systems move in from the Atlantic, bringing wet and windy weather for many places. Temperatures should stay mild for most, so a White Christmas is unlikely except for perhaps Scottish mountain tops.

Thursday 21/12/17
Pressure will be generally high. A weak front lies across central regions, bringing cloudy skies and patchy rain or drizzle, most persistent over western hills of Wales, perhaps north-west England. Murky in the south-west. Brighter toward the north of Britain. A few showers will affect northern Scotland, wintry over the mountains. Winds fairly light. Mild in the south, cooler north, highs 6 to 11C.

Friday 22/12/17
Temperatures lower than midweek, but close to average overall. High pressure lies to the south-west and a slack weaterly flow covers the British Isles. Largely dry, but a lot of cloud in the west, perhaps local drizzle. Some fog, especially in central and southern areas, which may be slow to clear. Best of any weak sunshine in the east. Light winds. A chilly start with local frost. Highs 5 to 10C.

Saturday 23/12/17
Pressure remains high toward the south. A west to southwesterly breeze is likely to freshen. Fronts move into western Scotland bringing some rain. Most places dry. Local fog in southern England. Best sun toward the east. Fairly mild, 7 to 11C.

Christmas Eve 24/12/17
