Week ahead - December 08, 2017
Rain, snow, possible gales
Some winter sunshine

Issued: 1000hrs Friday 8th December 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

A chilly week, but slightly milder midweek

It will be a cold weekend for all, with widespread frost and ice. Saturday sees plenty of sunshine and scattered snow showers. Sunday brings a mix of rain and snow - the snow focused on the north Midlands, Peak District and Pennines, but is likely to accumulate even at low levels in northern England. Monday brings a risk of gales to southern Britain, and potential snow for the Midlands and Home Counties, although some areas will just see rain.

Monday 11/12/17
Low pressure to the south of Britain may develop into a potent storm system over northern France and the English Channel, bringing a risk of gales to southern England. A zone of heavy rain may affect south-east England, with a risk of snow over higher ground, perhaps more widespread snow for the Midlands. Disruption to travel may occur. Drier toward the north, although snow showers will be draped around northern coasts. A chilly day, 0 to 5C.

Tuesday 12/12/17
Cold with overnight temperatures well below freezing for some, especially in the north. A cool west to northwesterly pattern influences the country. A bright day, with crisp winter sunshine. Wintry showers around western coasts, with snow over higher ground. Central and eastern regions should stay mainly dry. Temperatures a degree or so higher for most, but still cool, 2 to 6C, mildest south-west.

Wednesday 13/12/17
Fronts moving in from the Atlantic bring a mix of rain and snow, although it looks likely that milder air will advance further across the country, meaning more areas will see rain and a thaw of previous snow cover. However, rain may be preceded by snow - in Scotland and over the Pennines it may stay as snow for many hours. Strengthening westerly winds. Highs 2 to 7C, mildest south.

Thursday 14/12/17
Most likely on the cool side, with west to northwesterly winds. Areas of showers, wintry in places, snow mostly over the hills in northern regions. Some bright or sunny spells for central inland regions. Highs 3 to 6C.

Friday 15/12/17
Staying cool or cold. Further wintry showers possible. A north or northwesterly wind. Frosty overnight. Some sunshine by day. Highs 2 to 7C, coldest north.

Saturday 16/12/17
Pressure may briefly build from the west. Largely dry, with scattered wintry showers near coasts. Frosty overnight. Highs 2 to 7C, mildest south-west.
