Issued: 0900hrs Sunday 31st December 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Frequent rain, snow over hills

It will be a turbulent weather pattern to start 2018, with areas of low pressure barrelling in from the Atlantic. Periods of gales are likely, with heavy rain and high seas around west & southern coasts. Temepratures will vary during the first week of January, sometimes mild, especially in the south. However, toward next weekend, indications favour generally colder conditions developing from the north.

Wednesday 03/01/18
Strong westerly winds across the country. A risk of gales early in the day for southern coasts. Rain at times, locally prolonged in the west & south-west. Clusters of showers toward the north-west, with snow over the mountains. Possible hail and thunder. Brightest skies toward the east & north-east - glimpses of sunshine. Highs 5 to 9C, but feeling colder in the wind.

Thursday 04/01/18
Winds probably easing, at least for a time, but may strengthen again in the south-west as another Atlantic low arrives. Briefly slack pressure may allow skies to clear and frost to form before dawn. A chilly day for northern Britain, but it may be dry and bright here. Fronts encroaching from the south-west brings rain and milder air to Ireland and south-western Britain. Highs 3 to 9C.

Friday 05/01/18
Broadly unsettled with low pressure in charge. Areas of persistent rain and hill snow spreading north & east across the country. Clusters of frequent heavy showers in the west. A risk of gales around western coasts. Locally bright with some sunshine, but most places will see rain at times. Temperatures ranging between 3 and 8C, mildest toward the south.

Saturday 06/01/18
Low pressure is expected to slip south across Britain, allowing colder air to spread from the north. Rain or snow, locally persistent. Generally windy, with possible gales. Brightest toward the north-west. Feeling cold. Highs 2 to 6C.

Sunday 07/01/18
High pressure building toward the north brings a likelihood of cold, clear and frosty conditions for northern Britain. Areas of wintry showers for central and eastern England. Chilly northeasterly winds. Highs 1 to 5C.

Monday 08/01/18
Most likely staying cold, but details very uncertain. Perhaps dry and frosty for many, but some wintry showers are possible. Highs 1 to 5C.
